Meet the distinguished jury of the Letter.2 competition:
Peter Biľak is a Slovak graphic and typeface designer, based in The Hague, The Netherlands. He is the head of Typotheque and co-founder of the Indian Type Foundry. Biľak teaches typeface design at the postgraduate course Type & Media at the KABK, Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, and lectures widely on graphic design and typography. He is the founding editor of Dot Dot Dot, an art and design magazine, and he also contributes regularly to international publications and books.
Rubén Fontana incorporated typography to the Graphic Design BA course of the University of Buenos Aires, and he was lecturer of typography until 1997. He has given conference presentations and was invited lecturer in numerous events and education programs in South America and Europe. He chaired the biennials LetrasLatinas in 2004 and 2006, and was the editor and publisher of tipoGrafica magazine for 20 years. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.
John Hudson is a typeface designer and co-founder of Tiro Typeworks, a small digital foundry specialising in custom font solutions for multilingual computing and publishing. He has designed or collaborated on types for the Arabic, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Ethiopic, Greek, Hebrew, extended Latin, and Thai writing systems.
Akira Kobayashi studied at the Musashino Art University in Tokyo, and later followed this up with a calligraphy course at the London College of Printing. Since May 2001 he has worked as Type Director at Linotype GmbH. Kobayashi has recently completed the Neue Frutiger type family in close collaboration with the original designer Adrian Frutiger.
Lucie Lacava is a design consultant based in Montreal. Her company has developed an international expertise in editorial design and visual identity, recognized for its architectural approach to design and streamlined use of custom typography. Her awards include the Society for News Design "Best of Show" and “World's Best Designed Newspaper". Lacava has lectured internationally on newspaper design and typography. She has judged news and design competitions and has been published in critical books on the topic of newspaper design. Lacava is past president of the Society for News Design (2001).
Gerry Leonidas is a Senior Lecturer in Typography at the University of Reading (UK) and Programme Director of the MA in Typeface Design. He spends most of his time talking and writing about typeface and document design at a range of levels. He also helps designers get their heads round Greek typography and typeface design. He is frequently invited to speak, teach, and review the work of others.
Dr Fiona Ross, is a typographic consultant, typeface designer, lecturer and author, specializing in non-Latin scripts, having worked for many years at Linotype Limited (UK) with responsibility for the design and development of Linotype's non-Latin typefaces and typesetting schemes. She has collaborated with Tiro Typeworks on Arabic, Indian and Thai projects, and is a part-time lecturer at the University of Reading.
José Scaglione is a graphic and a typeface designer and he is a partner of the independent type foundry TypeTogether. He teaches typography at the National University of Rosario and at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and he is frequently invited to lecture about typography and to lead workshops of typeface design at international conferences and academic institutions. He is a member of the Board of the Association Typographique Internationale since 2007.
